Lucknow: A 26-year-old police constable was found hanging inside the barrack where he lived on the premises of Gomti Nagar police station on Sunday evening. Police informed his family and sent the body for post-mortem examination.The deceased was identified as Akash Yadav, a native of Kherki village under Chandpur police station of Bijnor district. He was a member of the 2019 batch and had been posted at Gomti Nagar police station for around two years.According to police, Akash was staying in the men’s barrack on the top floor of the police station. At around 5:45 pm, constable Satish Kharwar, who was also staying in the barrack, noticed that the door of the right-side barrack on the top floor was locked from inside. After knocking repeatedly and receiving no response, the colleague reportedly looked through a window and found Akash hanging from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet. He immediately alerted other police personnel.Station house officer informed senior officers and reached the spot with a police team. Police opened the barrack door following the prescribed procedure, while the process was videographed. The constable was brought down and immediately taken to Lohia Hospital, where doctors examined him and declared him dead.The body was subsequently taken into police custody. After completion of the inquest proceedings, it was sent to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.DCP, east, Deeksha Sharma confirmed the incident and said the constable’s family had been informed. “His family members were on their way to Lucknow,” she added.Police said Akash had appeared disturbed for about a week before the incident. His colleagues had noticed the change and asked him if something was troubling him, but he reportedly did not disclose what was bothering him. His colleagues described him as a cheerful and fitness-conscious person. He regularly worked out at a gym and was known among fellow personnel for his interest in bodybuilding. Akash had joined the police force in 2019. Before his posting at Gomti Nagar, he had served at Chinhat police station for around four years.Police said the exact circumstances surrounding his death are being examined and further proceedings will be undertaken on the basis of the post-mortem report and other findings of the inquiry.
