BENGALURU: Karnataka is preparing for a day of protests, possible transportation disruptions and bad weather on Thursday, August 13, with the biggest event being a statewide bandh over the Cauvery water dispute.Pro-Kannada organizations have called for a 12-hour shutdown from 6am to 6pm, demanding stronger action on the Cauvery issue and long-pending projects like Mekedatu, Mahadayi and Kalasa-Banduri.The bandh could affect public transport, taxis, autorickshaws, hotels, shops and other commercial establishments in some parts of the state.However, there are expectations that essential services such as hospitals and medical shops will continue to function.Schools are also expected to remain open after the Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools withdrew its earlier call for closure.Bengaluru is likely to be the worst affected, particularly in terms of roads and public transport.Traffic restrictions and protests may affect commuters and interstate travelers in border areas like Attibele on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu route.The weather may compound the disruption.India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms, lightning and gusty surface winds in Karnataka on August 13.Warnings of heavy rain continue to be in force for coastal and south interior Karnataka.Thunderstorms and strong winds are also likely in north interior Karnataka.There may be delays, diversions and disruptions to services throughout the day due to the combination of protests and monsoon weather.Residents traveling long distances have been advised to check transport services and local conditions before setting out.The Cauvery dispute continues to hold center stage in public debate and Thursday is expected to be a closely watched day across Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru and districts bordering Tamil Nadu.
