NEW DELHI: In a big indigenisation push, the Indian Navy has taken a big step to invite Indian companies to develop and manufacture critical subsystems of its carrier-based Russian-built MiG-29K fighter fleet. The move is aimed at improving aircraft availability, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthening India’s self-reliance on critical aircraft components. The MiG-29K is a state-of-the-art, all-weather supersonic multi-role fighter serving as the primary carrier-based strike aircraft for the Indian Navy. It operates from INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, focusing on air dominance, maritime strike, and sea denial roles. It excels in protecting carrier battle groups and projecting power. However, the Navy has faced challenges related to its maintenance, spare parts and serviceability. The Navy has now invited response to request for information (RFI) for “Indigenous Design and Development of Ground Automated Test System (NASK 1-29K) and Carrier Based Automated Test System (KSAK 1-29K) for MiG 29K/ KUB aircraft” from reputed Indian firms based in India having technical and financial capability, infrastructure and experience to execute the project.NASK 1-29K and KSAK 1-29K, automated test systems are utilised for undertaking various scheduled maintenance task cards on MiG 29K/KUB aircraft. Testing of all equipment and systems, include fuel system, air data system, avionics, fly by wire, electrical power generation and distribution system; testing of armament systems in preparation for weapon loading; testing for various modes and functionality/performance of the radar and its sub components; and testing and investigation of engine parameters. These systems are essential for ensuring that the MiG-29K remains combat-ready during carrier operations. Private players will likely work in collaboration with defence PSUs and research organisations. The move is meant to strengthen indigenous manufacturing capabilities and enhance national security through supply chain control.
