HYDERABAD: A 32-year-old businessman was run over by a Mercedes on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge in the wee hours of Sunday. After the accident, the driver, who is yet to be identified, abandoned the car and fled from the spot. The car has a West Bengal registration number.Around 3.15am, Shyam Raj, a resident of Hafeezpet, and his wife had come to the cable bridge on a bike. After parking the bike, he stood on the road, while his wife was on the walkway. As he was clicking her pictures, the car rammed into him and flipped after hitting the railing, Madhapur police said. Raj suffered fatal injuries.Passersby came to the rescue of the victim and the accused, who managed to get out of the vehicle. In the melee, the car driver managed to escape from the spot. The victim was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment around 4 pm.“The couple had gone to send a parcel, reportedly to a travel bus service. Later, they had a late-night dinner. While returning to Hafeezpet, they stopped for a while on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge. The car driver, who was moving from Jubilee Hills and heading towards IKEA, rammed into the man,” a Madhapur cop said.When the investigators verified the WB-registered car’s records, they found that it was registered in the name of a company.“At the time of the accident, only one person was in the car. As of now, he is at large,” a cop said.Police said that though there was CCTV footage, it was not clear.A case was registered on the charge of negligence causing death.
