Lucknow: The Gomti Barrage Bridge will remain closed to traffic from May 7 to June 15 to facilitate repair work. Four damaged gates on the stretch from Samta Mulak Chowk towards Balu Adda will be replaced during this period. The move aims to strengthen the ageing barrage structure and ensure safer operations. The project aims to modernise the barrage with a computerised control system, similar to the Ganga Barrage. A dedicated control room will be set up within the complex, enabling operators to open or close all gates at once. The overall upgrade is estimated at around Rs 10 crore.Currently, gate operations are fully manual, requiring staff to climb onto platforms and operate each gate individually — a process that is both time-consuming and risky. The new system will integrate the motors of all gates into a central network, allowing remote operation.Officials said nine gates have outlived their lifespan. Two have already been replaced, while approval has been granted for four more gates. The current phase is expected to cost about Rs 5 crore.Once completed, the upgrade is expected to improve flood management by enabling quicker response to rising water levels in the Gomti river, especially during the monsoon.
