BENGALURU: A 23-year-old nanny, a native of Manipur working in Bengaluru, has accused her employer’s spouse of illegally confining, assaulting and starving her at their residence on the campus of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in Bilekahalli on Bannerghatta Road.In a complaint filed with Mico Layout police station, the woman, C Nianghaunuam, said she had been working since 2019 at the residence of Amar and his wife Anshu on the IIM-B campus, primarily taking care of their children while residing in the house.According to the complaint, the alleged harassment began in 2021. Nianghaunuam claimed Anshu frequently assaulted her, constantly checked her mobile phone conversations and, at times, confiscated her phone. “Even when I was ill, she would beat me. I was assaulted several times and cannot remember all the incidents. The last assault took place on April 15, after which I was locked inside the house,” she alleged. She further stated food was allegedly denied to her from the morning of May 4 and that she had to seek help from neighbours. “The neighbours provided me with bananas and parathas, besides helping me with a mobile phone through which I contacted my relatives and members of Kuki Students’ Organisation Bengaluru (KSOB) for assistance,” the FIR stated.Based on the complaint, police registered a case under BNS Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 127(4) (wrongful confinement).Soon after the incident came to light, IIM-B officials, in a statement, said the institute had extended necessary assistance and support to the woman despite her not being employed through institute contractors. “We remain committed to following the law, due process and doing the right thing,” the institute said in the statement.
