NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricketer and actor Yograj Singh was booked in Chandigarh over alleged derogatory remarks against women made in a viral clip from a web series, news agency ANI reported on Thursday.According to police sources quoted by ANI, an FIR has been registered at Sector 36 Police Station in Chandigarh under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 62A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.Police said the case was filed after the clip spread widely on social media and led to criticism and demands for action over the alleged remarks. Further investigation is underway. The clip is reportedly from an episode of the Hindi web series Lukkhe. In the scene, Yograj Singh’s character is shown inside a police station speaking with police officers before making the alleged remarks about women.Yograj, who is the father of Yuvraj Singh, has previously been involved in controversies over his public comments.Earlier this year in March, Yograj made another controversial statement while speaking about players’ retirement decisions and the role of women in the family. In an interview with InsideSport, he had said: “Ladies of the house, your wifes, they start coaching, they tell you it’s time for you to retire, it’s time to look after the family, the kids ,let’s enjoy kids.”“So I believe women should not come in between the legendary prospect of a player, fakir aur player yeh dono ka koi dharam nahi hai, warg nahi hai, they belong to god,” Yograj had said.In the same interaction, Yograj also commented on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma amid discussions around retirement and age in cricket. Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from T20Is and Tests and now play only ODI cricket. They retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win and stepped away from Test cricket last year.“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are young cricketers and they want to quit. Laanat hai zindagi bhar. Make the world realise that you are the best, that you are indispensable. Even if you are fifty years old and still scoring a double hundred, no one will drop you. So this age factor is very funny in this country,” Yograj had said.
