NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Friday granted three days’ interim bail to Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case registered under the stringent UAPA.The court allowed Umar Khalid to be released on interim bail from June 1 to June 3, considering his mother’s upcoming surgery. He had approached the high court after a trial court rejected his plea seeking temporary relief. While granting bail, the court imposed several conditions on Umar Khalid. He has been directed to remain within the Delhi-NCR region, stay at the address provided to the authorities, refrain from visiting any place other than the hospital, and use only one mobile phone number during the bail period.Opposing the plea, Delhi Police argued that the surgery was not serious enough to warrant interim bail. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju told the court that Khalid could instead be permitted to meet his mother under police escort.Khalid had sought 15 days of interim bail, citing the need to care for his ailing mother during her surgery and to attend the Chehlum ceremony of his uncle, who died last month.Khalid was arrested in September 2020 in the larger conspiracy case related to the northeast Delhi riots and has remained in custody since then.(With PTI inputs)
