Canada, has announced that it is entering the sixth-generation Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) initiated by UK‑Japan‑Italy, as an observer. This even as the Royal Canadian Air Force has ordered 88 F-35As from the United States, in a bid to replace each and every older F/A-18 Hornet in service with the fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The sixth-generation GCAP, once operationalised is set to replace fourth-generation fighters such as the Eurofighter Typhoon from UK and Italy’s service, as well as the Mitsubishi F-2 from Japanese service. The Canadians are likely to supplement their fleet of F-35s with this more modern fighter aircraft.India, too, is seeking to partner with either the GCAP, or what was the Franco‑German‑Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. Germany has since left the project, over differences with France. India is currently working on a fifth-generation fighter aircraft called the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This aircraft is not expected to be operational before 2035. This even as the China’s air force, currently operates as many as 500 fifth-generation J-20 fighter aircraft. The Chinese are already testing two separate sixth-generation platforms called the J-36 and the J-50. The Chinese have been flying prototypes of these two aircraft.The US too is working on its own sixth‑generation fighter program known as the F-47 under the Next Generation Air Dominance project, this is separate from the US Navy’s F/A‑XX project. While announcing the project in the oval office, US President Donald Trump had stated that the United States will be selling a toned down version of the F-47 to friendly nations. Boeing has been awarded the contract to make this aircraft. The US Air Force has recently ordered different types of loyal wingmen drones to accompany these fighters. The two loyal wingmen drones or Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), will till then fly with other fourth and fifth generation fighters till the F-47 enters service, thus working to mature this technology. In a recent exercise, Boeing’s MQ-28 drone took part in a large scale multi-national exercise over the Pacific Ocean.Sixth‑generation fighters represent a transformative leap beyond fifth‑generation aircraft. They employ all‑aspect stealth shaping rather than frontal stealth, making them harder to detect from any angle. Digital‑first engineering and model‑based design ensure resilience by isolating flight‑critical functions. Advanced propulsion systems, including variable‑cycle engines balance efficiency with high thrust. Their weapons suites will feature long‑range standoff missiles and directed‑energy defenses. These futuristic aircraft will integrate artificial intelligence, cyber tools and advanced networking to accelerate decision‑making. These network-centric fighters are being designed to operate unmanned platforms known as CCA in a manned‑unmanned teaming scenario. The addition of these CCAs will improve combat effectiveness of these platforms.
