Lucknow: Flagging off 45 electric buses and three hydrogen-powered buses for operations in the Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) areas, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said the initiative is part of efforts to promote cleaner transportation and reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.The CM cited concerns like air pollution, climate change and global energy uncertainties as reasons for encouraging alternative mobility solutions.The electric and hydrogen buses will operate in Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA region, which includes the area around the upcoming Jewar airport.Officials said the service was intended to improve last-mile connectivity for residents, commuters and air passengers.“The region has developed into a major centre for information technology, electronics, data centres, start-ups and manufacturing activities, creating a need for expanded public transport infrastructure. Metro rail services already operate in parts of Noida and Greater Noida,” the CM said.Yogi also referred to infrastructure development projects undertaken in the state, including expressways, airports and metro rail systems. He said UP currently has five international airports: Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Kushinagar and the upcoming Noida International Airport.Three hydrogen buses have been provided to YEIDA by NTPC. State officials said hydrogen fuel for the vehicles will be produced using treated wastewater. The buses are expected to operate in areas near the airport.The buses will provide connectivity to the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar. He also inaugurated the Noida electric bus depot through video conferencing from Lucknow.According to the state govt, 110 electric buses are expected to be operational in the region by June 15. Authorities plan to expand the fleet to as many as 500 buses in phases, depending on demand.Govt also highlighted its broader clean transport initiatives. According to officials, more than 700 electric buses are currently operating across 17 municipal corporations in Uttar Pradesh.The state is also implementing the Uttar Pradesh Clean Air Management Project (UP CAMP), supported by World Bank funding of Rs 2,741 crore.
