Lucknow: In a first, Indian Railways has introduced an AI-powered sign language train information system for hearing-impaired passengers at Badshahnagar railway station.The initiative, by Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway, aims to make railway services more accessible by providing live train announcements, arrival and departure timings, and platform information through Indian Sign Language on LED screens.The system has been developed by the division’s Signal and Telecommunication Department led by senior divisional signal and telecommunication engineer Vaibhav Shrivastava.Divisional railway manager (DRM) Gaurav Agarwal said, “The technology automatically converts existing public announcements into sign language, allowing hearing-impaired passengers to access travel information independently without relying on assistance.”“A successful trial of the system was conducted in the presence of representatives of a Noida-based organisation working for the deaf and mute, and four certified sign language interpreters,” he added.The project has been developed in collaboration with Techtron Infotech Pvt Ltd and has been implemented at Badshahnagar station after a successful two-month trial.
