Lucknow: Researchers at the chemistry department of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) have received an Indian patent for developing an eco-friendly technology to produce primary amines, an important ingredient used to make many life-saving medicines and specialty chemicals. The patented technology, titled “Method for metal-free direct transformation of aryl boronic acid to primary amines” (patent no. 595951), was developed under the guidance of assistant Prof Jawaharlal Jat and research scholar Puneet Kumar. The patent has been granted by Union govt’s patent office.Primary amines are widely used in making antibiotics, cancer medicines, diabetes drugs, blood pressure medicines and medicines for neurological disorders. They are also used in the manufacture of pesticides, dyes, polymers and other specialty chemicals.“Existing industrial methods use expensive metal catalysts such as palladium, nickel, copper and iron. These methods are costly, require high temperatures and pressures and can leave behind metal impurities in the final product. The newly developed technology does not use any metal catalyst. The amines we have developed do not require metal catalyst,” said JatHe said the technology converts easily available raw material into primary amines in a single step under mild conditions. This makes the process simpler, cleaner and more environmentally friendly while reducing the risk of contamination.
