Lucknow: Colourful blooms and a lively atmosphere marked opening of the 2-day Bougainvillea Festival at the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) on Saturday, with visitors in large numbers turning up to witness the floral displays and participate in gardening activities.The festival, held on Mar 14 and 15 at the institute’s botanical garden, was inaugurated by NKS Chauhan, officer on special duty in Chief Minister’s Office, in the presence of Prof Sunil Kumar Singh, director of National Institute of Oceanography, Goa.NBRI director A K Shasany said, “The annua festival is popular among gardeners, students and researchers. Visitors and gardening lovers come to explore flower displays, interact with experts and take photographs, while many seek advice on plant maintenance and terrace gardening.”Festival convener K J Singh said 64 exhibitors are participating this year, with 209 entries across 20 competition categories. Participants include individuals as well as govt and private organisations.More than 300 bougainvillea varieties conserved by the institute are on display, featuring a wide range of colours and patterns. The festival will conclude on Sunday with prize distribution by chief guest Governor Anandiben Patel.The exhibition is open to public from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. Bougainvillea plants are also available for sale.
