Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday attended a Buddha Purnima programme at the party’s state headquarters, where Buddhist monks from across UP and other states participated in large numbers.Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the relevance of Lord Buddha’s teachings in modern times, highlighting the message of “self-enlightenment” and peaceful coexistence. He said Buddha’s philosophy has guided societies globally and remains crucial in addressing life’s challenges.Akhilesh also expressed concern over what he termed “threats to the Constitution and democracy,” calling upon Buddhist monks to support efforts to safeguard constitutional values inspired by BR Ambedkar. He said that if SP won the elections, his party would prioritise development of key Buddhist sites such as Kushinagar, Sarnath and Lumbini to boost global connectivity and tourism. The event featured traditional Buddhist chants, felicitation of monks and community feasting, with several party functionaries and dignitaries in attendance.
