LUCKNOW: A Class 11 student’s desperate attempt to hide his online gaming debts turned into a bizarre fake kidnapping drama, complete with an AI-generated image of what appeared to be a badly injured eye, a ransom demand, and a frantic police search.The teenager allegedly wanted Rs 1 lakh from his businessman father to clear debts accumulated while playing online games. Instead of admitting that he had borrowed money to feed his gaming habit, he reportedly created an elaborate kidnapping story and tried to make it look real using artificial intelligence.But his carefully crafted plan unravelled within hours.Police traced him to a friend’s house in Birhi Buzurg village under the Uruwa Bazar police station limits, where he was found safe at around 2 am. What initially appeared to be a kidnapping case turned out to be a teenager’s elaborate attempt to extort money from his own family.He left home, switched off phone and ‘disappeared’According to SP (South) Dinesh Kumar Puri, the student, who lives in the Dhanghata area of Sant Kabir Nagar, left home around 7 pm on Tuesday, telling his family that he was going to Sikriganj.Once there, he switched off his mobile phone, creating the first impression that something had gone wrong.He then began sending WhatsApp messages to his father between 7.39 pm and 9.47 pm.The messages contained a chilling claim: that he had been kidnapped.But the teenager did not stop at messages. To make his story appear more convincing, he sent his father a photograph showing what appeared to be his badly injured eye.The image was fake.AI image became the ‘proof’ of his kidnappingDuring questioning, the teenager reportedly told police that his girlfriend, who lives in Delhi, helped him create the fake injury image using an AI tool.The digitally generated image was then used as supposed evidence that he had been assaulted by his kidnappers.He demanded Rs 1 lakh from his father as ransom and asked him to transfer the money online.When his father said he could not make an online payment, the teenager allegedly changed the script — and increased the ransom.He demanded Rs 2 lakh in cash.That was when the worried father contacted police.Police followed the digital trailThe family had every reason to fear the worst. But investigators quickly began following the digital trail left behind by the teenager.Police first traced the location where his mobile phone had been switched off, which led them to Sikriganj.Dhanghata police asked the father to coordinate with Sikriganj police. The father reached Sikriganj around midnight as police intensified the search.The teenager’s mobile number was placed under surveillance.The trail eventually led investigators to Birhi Buzurg village in the Uruwa Bazar area.Around 2 am, a police team reached the location.There was no hostage situation. No kidnappers. No injured victim.The teenager was found safe and sound at a friend’s house.‘Kidnapping’ collapses during questioningThe teenager reportedly confessed during questioning that he had fabricated the entire kidnapping drama.Police said he had become addicted to online gaming and had borrowed considerable sums from friends and acquaintances to continue playing.With creditors pressing for repayment, he allegedly decided that the easiest way out was to obtain money from his father without revealing the real reason.The result was an elaborate deception involving a switched-off phone, fake ransom messages, and an AI-generated injury image.Girlfriend helped create fake injury imageThe teenager reportedly told police that his girlfriend helped him generate the image of his apparently injured eye.Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the creation of the image and whether anyone else played a role in the plan.The case has also raised concerns over the growing ease with which AI-generated images can be used to manufacture seemingly convincing evidence in fake emergencies.Only son among three sistersPolice said the teenager is the only son among three sisters.His father, who had initially believed his son was in the hands of kidnappers, was reportedly furious after learning that the entire episode had been staged.Police subsequently handed the teenager over to his family after questioning.From online gaming debt to a fake kidnappingWhat began as an attempt to conceal online gaming losses ended with the teenager himself becoming the centre of a police investigation.Investigators said the incident was driven by his attempt to repay money borrowed for online gaming without telling his family the truth.Within just a few hours, the supposed kidnapping had been exposed — and the very technology the teenager used to make his story believable ultimately helped unravel the hoax.
