Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai on Tuesday met the survivors of the Aliganj fire tragedy at the KGMU Trauma centre and wished them a speedy recovery.The blaze, which claimed the lives of 15 students and left several others injured, has triggered demands for a thorough investigation into alleged lapses in safety measures at educational institutions and commercial complexes.Later in the day, the Congress organised a condolence meeting at the party’s state headquarters, Nehru Bhawan, where tributes were paid to the victims and a two-minute silence was observed for the departed souls.Rai described the incident as “heart-rending” and alleged that negligence on the part of the administration had contributed to the loss of lives.“Fifteen young students, barely in their 20s, have died in this tragic incident. It is a deeply disturbing event. Govt must take immediate and stringent steps to prevent repeat of such tragedies,” he said.He reiterated the party’s demand for accountability and stronger enforcement of fire safety norms at coaching institutes and other public establishments.Several senior Congress netas, including MP Rakesh Rathore, participated in the condolence meeting.
