Lucknow: People with diabetes and other metabolic disorders face a higher risk of gingivitis, a gum disease that causes swollen and bleeding gums, experts said at the Indian Dental Show IGP. They added that treating gum disease can also improve overall health.Chief coordinator of the event Dr K K Gupta said poor oral hygiene remains the most common cause of gingivitis. The condition, however, is more common among people with diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. It can also develop during pregnancy or as a side effect of medicines used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure and depression.

Dr Gupta said poor metabolic health leads to chronic inflammation, making gums more vulnerable to infection. He said the link works both ways: people with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease, while untreated gum disease can make blood sugar levels harder to control.Explaining the wider health impact, faculty KGMU prosthodontics department Prof Kamleshwar Singh said gums act as a protective barrier between the mouth and bloodstream. When gums are inflamed or infected, bacteria can enter the bloodstream and spread to other parts of the body. Studies have found oral bacteria in fatty deposits inside blood vessels, suggesting a possible link between gum disease and heart disease.Dr Pankaj Taneja said digital technology, artificial intelligence and advanced dental materials are helping dentists diagnose problems more accurately and provide better treatment, particularly for patients requiring full-mouth rehabilitation.Coordinator Dr Ashwani Mishra said demand for “Hollywood Smile” makeovers is growing. He said advanced veneers and ultra-thin lumineers can improve the appearance of teeth while requiring minimal removal of natural tooth structure.Trade chairperson Dr Jagriti Gupta said advised people to brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between their teeth every day, reduce sugar intake and visit a dentist regularly. The exhibition featured leading international dental companies showcasing digital technologies, dental equipment, implants, biomaterials and other innovations.
