Lucknow: A doctor was booked by Lucknow Police on charges of dowry harassment, cruelty, assault and contracting a second marriage during subsistence of first marriage, following a complaint filed by his estranged wife, who alleged years of abuse and abandonment.FIR was registered at Mahanagar police station under sections related to cruelty by husband, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult, marrying again during the lifetime of a spouse, and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Police said an investigation has been initiated and further action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the probe.According to FIR, the couple married in Dec 2003 according to Hindu customs.

The woman alleged that despite substantial cash, jewellery and household articles given at the time of marriage, her husband and his family soon began demanding additional dowry and money.She claimed that when her family failed to meet those demands, she was subjected to repeated physical assault, verbal abuse and mental harassment. The complaint added that after the doctor shifted to Delhi for work in 2004, she joined him in an effort to save the marriage but continued to face violence and humiliation.The woman alleged that she was eventually forced to return to her parental home. Later, her father provided Rs 2 lakh in cash after being assured that a house would be purchased and the couple would live together. She also claimed that gold jewellery worth nearly Rs 10 lakh was taken from her on the promise that it would be replaced after the proposed house was purchased, but neither was the property bought nor the valuables returned.The woman stated that after she gave birth to a daughter in 2006, she and the child were abandoned and received no financial support. She alleged that her husband later married another woman without obtaining a legal divorce and started a separate family.SHO, Mahanagar, Akhilesh Mishra, said the allegations were being examined.
