Lucknow: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a prosecution complaint under the PMLA, 2002, against former MLA Arif Anwar Hashmi and his wife, Rozi Salma, before the Special Judge (CBI/ED) on Monday. The ED initiated its probe based on multiple FIRs registered by UP Police against Hashmi and his associates. Subsequent investigations and charge sheets filed by the police established offences including illegal encroachment, forgery, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. According to the ED, scrutiny of financial records revealed substantial unaccounted cash deposits in the bank accounts of Hashmi and his wife, which were grossly disproportionate to their known sources of income. The accused allegedly failed to satisfactorily explain the source of these funds, including investments made in immovable properties. ED alleged that the couple generated proceeds of crime worth Rs 8.24 crore through offences under the PMLA.
