Lucknow: Girls have been outperforming boys in board examinations and medical field, but now they are excelling in technical education as well. It was the first in the history of APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) that more girls won medals than boys by performing better in examinations.Out of 84 medals awarded (35 gold, 23 silver and 24 bronze), 52 medals, including the prestigious Chancellor’s Gold Medal, were won by girls, while 31 went to boys. One student received two medals.Anshika Rana, a BTech (Computer Science and Engineering) student from Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College, Ghaziabad, was conferred with the Chancellor’s Gold Medal.The medal is awarded to the university’s top-performing student with the highest cumulative grade point average across all programmes.“I have secured a campus placement with a leading global technology company and plan to continue preparing for better opportunities in the same field,” said Anshika.BOX 1Maa-Beti Sammelan heldThe university also organised a ‘Maa-Beti Sammelan’ on the campus for the first time. Around 100 mothers received the medical reports of their daughters studying in various colleges. A doctor counselled them on healthcare and preventive measures. HPV vaccination was also conducted for girl students as part of the initiative.BOX2AKTU confers D.Litt. on Rogan art exponentThe university also conferred an honorary D.Litt. on Rogan art exponent Ashish Shantilal Kansara for his contribution to the promotion of art and culture. Rogan art is a 1,550-year-old textile craft originating in the Kutch region of Gujarat. Kansara has played a key role in preserving the craft in its authentic form, safeguarding its heritage and passing it on to future generations.
