Lucknow: Bakra mandis across the state capital are witnessing a sharp rise in footfall ahead of Bakrid (Eid al-Adha), as traders bring premium goat breeds from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh to meet festive demand.Markets in Dubagga, Sitapur Road, Kakori and Chinhat remained crowded, with families arriving in groups to select animals for qurbani. Traders said snow-white goats, Kashmiri long-maned varieties and heavy Sojat goats are among the most sought-after this season, while Tota Pari, Barbari and Jamuna Pari continue to be favourites.Prices have climbed compared with previous years. Goats are selling between Rs 15,000 and Rs 70,000 depending on breed, size and weight, with most transactions taking place at Rs 500 to Rs 550 per kg. Premium, heavy-size goats priced from around Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3.50 lakh are also drawing attention in the mandis.Buyers were seen carefully inspecting animals for health, teeth, gait and overall appearance before finalising purchases. Many families said they were prioritising defect-free, healthy goats that meet religious requirements for sacrifice.Traders from Gujarat and Rajasthan said they transported animals to Lucknow weeks in advance and faced higher costs for feed, transport and veterinary care.Mohammad Yahya, a goat farmer, said, “We have brought a few goats from nearby villages while many are reared on our farms. People are more interested in mid-range goats around Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 this year.”Haadi Anwar, a goat trader, said, “In the scorching heat, we have installed fans and coolers for the goats. Rooh Afza and jaggery in iced water are being fed to maintain hydration, and we bathe them twice daily to keep them healthy.”
