Google shipped a native Gemini desktop app for macOS, free to all users on macOS 15 and up. The key interaction model is an Option+Space shortcut that summons Gemini from anywhere – no tab switching, no browser required. Screen sharing lets users point Gemini at whatever they’re looking at, including local files, and chat history syncs across devices. The positioning is clearly aimed at the same space Apple Intelligence occupies on-device, except routed through Google’s cloud models. With ChatGPT’s desktop app already established on Mac and Claude available through its own client, Gemini arriving here feels late but necessary – desktop presence is becoming table stakes for AI assistants.
