Lucknow: UP is scaling up to become the hub of India’s data economy, using its data centre policy and budgetary allocations to encourage the setting up of multiple data centres in the state.In the 2025-26 budget, the state govt announced the development of large-scale data centre clusters in the state and the formation of a State Data Centre Authority.The govt set a target to develop 4-5 large data centre clusters with a total capacity of 5 gigawatts in the state by 2030. “Amid rapidly increasing digital usage, rising demand for cloud services and policies promoting data localisation, the importance of the data centre industry cannot be understated,” said a govt spokesperson.In addition, eight data centre parks with a total capacity of 900 megawatts will be developed with an investment of approximately Rs30,000 crore. Work on several of these projects has already commenced. The govt has issued letters of comfort to eight projects, including six data centre parks and two standalone data centre units.Through these projects, investments worth Rs21,342 crore and a capacity of 644 megawatts have been already secured in the state, the official added. The expansion of the data centre industry will not only strengthen digital infrastructure but will also create new employment opportunities in sectors such as IT, cloud services, networking and other technology-based services. At present, major technology companies are showing interest in investing in UP due to the favourable policies and conducive investment environment, he said.
