NEW DELHI: Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has formally been appointed as chief minister of Assam by governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya under Article 164(1) of the Constitution, paving the way for the formation of the next BJP-led government in the state.According to an official notification issued by Assam’s parliamentary affairs department, Sarma will take oath as chief minister at 11.40 am on Tuesday, May 12 at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.“In exercise of the powers vested in him under clause (1) of Article 164 of the Constitution of India, the Governor of Assam is pleased to appoint Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam,” the notification stated.The order was issued from Dispur on May 10 and signed by Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota.The swearing-in ceremony is expected to formally mark the beginning of the new government in the northeastern state following the BJP-led alliance’s electoral success.Earlier in the day, Sarma had staked claim to form the next government after meeting the Governor.The official notification confirming his appointment was later circulated by the Parliamentary Affairs Department.Sarma, one of the BJP’s most prominent leaders in the Northeast, is set to continue as Chief Minister after leading the party in the state.
