Sixteen years after he became the first umpire from Kerala to officiate in the IPL, K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan will now have company in the form of Tony Emmatty, who is set to make his debut as an on-field umpire when CSK hosts LSG on May 10.
However, the 40-year-old will get his first experience of the tournament by being the reserve umpire for the MI-LSG fixture in Mumbai on Monday.
The 2025-26 domestic season saw Tony’s breakthrough after he became a BCCI national panel umpire in 2018. Tony, who debuted as an umpire in the Ranji Trophy in 2023, officiated in six Ranji matches, including one in the knockout phase. It was followed by 20 matches in SMAT and six in VHT. His WPL experience includes four matches as the on-field umpire and two each as the third umpire and reserve umpire.
