Lucknow: Naka police on Saturday arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a Crime Branch officer to extort money from unsuspecting people.According to inspector Abhinav Kumar Verma, the case came to light following a complaint lodged on March 24 by Rais, a resident of Hussainganj in Unnao. In his complaint, Rais said that he visited a shrine near Charbagh railway station when a woman briefly spoke to him and then left. Shortly after, the accused approached him, claimed to be a Crime Branch officer, and stopped him for questioning. The accused, Arjun Kumar, a resident of Mataria village in Unnao district, then falsely accused Rais of misbehaving with the woman and threatened to send him to jail. To “settle” the matter, he demanded Rs 50,000. Frightened by the threat, Rais checked his pockets and wallet, from which the accused took Rs 2,500 before fleeing the spot. Later, Rais approached the Naka police station and filed a complaint. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case, launched an investigation, and arrested the accused on Saturday. Further legal proceedings are underway.
