Lucknow: Power bills in Uttar Pradesh will rise in April following an increase in the fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge (FPPAS), according to an order issued by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL).Under the order, a fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge (FPPAS) of 2.14% will be applied to April bills, resulting in an additional burden of around Rs 142 crore on consumers. In March, the fuel surcharge was reduced by -2.42%, leading to an estimated benefit of nearly Rs 141 crore. The April surcharge corresponds to fuel and transmission costs incurred in Jan 2026, as permitted under tariff regulations. Notably, FPPAS jumped to 10% in Feb (highest ever), while in Jan it was -2.33%. Surcharge of 5.56% was the second highest in Dec 2025. The Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad has objected to the continued surcharge, arguing that distribution companies hold substantial surplus funds. Parishad chairman Avadhesh Kumar Verma said a surplus exceeding Rs 51,000 crore raises questions over the need for monthly fuel surcharge recovery and warrants regulatory review.
