Schools and colleges across Mumbai will remain closed today, July 7, 2026, after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) extended the suspension of classes in view of continuing adverse weather conditions. The decision follows widespread rainfall across the city and an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rain and gusty winds.Educational institutions had also remained closed on July 6, 2026, as heavy monsoon showers affected normal life across Mumbai. The latest announcement extends the precautionary measure for another day, covering government, private and civic-run schools and colleges.Closure applies across Mumbai and neighbouring districtsThe BMC stated that all primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, along with colleges in Mumbai city and its suburbs, will remain closed today. The closure has also been extended to educational institutions in neighbouring districts, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar and Raigad. The decision has been taken as heavy rainfall continues across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with local authorities monitoring the situation closely.Heavy rainfall prompts precautionary measuresAccording to the IMD, the orange alert remains in effect because of the likelihood of heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. Continuous showers over the past two days have resulted in waterlogging in several areas, reports of fallen trees and minor disruptions to transport services.Civic authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless travel is essential. Emergency response teams continue to monitor rainfall and local conditions across the city.Offices remain open despite school closureWhile educational institutions have been directed to remain closed, government offices and private establishments are functioning as usual. The BMC has not announced any change in office operations but has urged commuters to exercise caution because of the prevailing weather conditions.Authorities are reviewing the situation on a regular basis. Any further decision regarding the reopening of schools and colleges will depend on subsequent weather assessments and official advisories.Students, parents and educational institutions have been advised to follow updates issued by the BMC and other local authorities regarding the resumption of classes. The civic body has stated that the precautionary closure has been implemented to ensure the safety of students and staff as the city continues to receive heavy monsoon rainfall.
