Lucknow: The city’s composite culture, shaped by different religious communities, regions and foreign influences, must be preserved through collective efforts by residents, said speakers at a seminar titled ‘Lucknow’s Proprietary – Who Owns Our City’ held at Colvin Taluqdars College on Sunday.The programme was organised by Aadab Arz Lucknow and focused on Lucknow’s shared heritage, civic responsibility and need to protect its traditions amid urban expansion.The session was moderated by Kanak Rekha Chauhan and the panel included college principal Sachchidanand Singh, retired Isabella Thoburn College professor Ruth Chakravarty and cultural commentator Hafeez Kidwai.Speakers said Lucknow’s identity has evolved through centuries of cultural interaction, reflected in its language, food, built heritage and social conduct, often described as ‘Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb’.“Lucknow is not just a geographical entity, it’s a living culture defined by its language, manners and traditions of mutual respect,” said Sachchidanand Singh.Hafeez Kidwai said, “Lucknow holds a legacy of etiquette which should be passed on to the coming generations. This will help keep the city’s social character intact.”Prof Ruth Chakravarty said, “The responsibility of preserving Lucknow’s Tehzeeb is not limited to any one section. It is a shared duty of all residents.”Organiser Sheikh Tariq said programme aimed at promoting civic awareness. “Such discussions encourage people to think about their role in protecting the cultural character of the city,” he said.The event included participation from residents from different professional backgrounds, including educationists and social workers. An interactive session was also held where participants shared their views on heritage conservation and civic engagement. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Sheikh Tariq.
