Lucknow: Nearly 24 years after he began his political journey as a ‘BJP karyakarta’, Union defence minister Rajnath Singh’s younger son, Neeraj Singh, has received his first major organisational recognition within the party. The 46-year-old was on Thursday appointed as a vice-president of the UP BJP, a move that is being viewed as a significant milestone in his political career and one that could pave the way for larger responsibilities in future.The appointment comes at a crucial juncture as the BJP prepares for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Party insiders believe that Neeraj’s elevation could enhance his political visibility and strengthen the BJP’s organisational outreach, particularly in the Awadh region where he has been active for several years.Neeraj replaces his elder brother, Pankaj Singh, who was serving as a state vice-president since 2010. Pankaj, a three-time MLA from Noida, held the position for nearly 16 years, making him one of the longest-serving office-bearers in the state unit. His tenure began when veteran BJP leader Surya Pratap Shahi headed the UP BJP unit.Expressing gratitude for the new responsibility, Neeraj said he would focus on strengthening the party organisation and ensuring the effective implementation of its objectives. Speaking to TOI, he described himself as a dedicated party worker who rose through the ranks.“I am thankful to the state leadership for giving me an opportunity to serve the organisation. My primary objective will be to strengthen the party and help it achieve its goals,” he said. Neeraj said that he was among lucky party functionaries who performed well during the party membership drive conducted in 2025.Neeraj recalled that he started working as an ordinary BJP karyakarta in 2002, a period when his father, Rajnath Singh, was serving as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Despite belonging to one of the BJP’s most influential political families, Neeraj has largely remained away from electoral politics and organisational limelight.A graduate of the University of Leeds in London, Neeraj has over the years played a visible role in political and social events linked to his father, who represents Lucknow in the Lok Sabha and is among the BJP’s most senior leaders. He has frequently attended public programmes, party functions and constituency-level events on behalf of Rajnath Singh whenever the Defence minister was unable to be present.His appointment has generated considerable discussion in Uttar Pradesh’s political circles. For several years, speculation has persisted over whether Neeraj would formally enter electoral politics. While some observers expected him to contest an election, others believed that he would first be inducted into the party’s organisational structure. Thursday’s development appears to have settled that debate, at least for the time being.Political observers see the move as part of the BJP’s broader effort to balance organisational experience, regional representation and social outreach ahead of the next Assembly elections. Sources within the party indicated that Neeraj’s appointment could help the BJP further consolidate its influence in the Awadh belt, a region where he has maintained a steady political presence.The elevation is also significant because it marks Neeraj Singh’s first major organisational assignment despite his long association with the party.
