Lucknow: The UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) has announced instalment-based payment options for pending electricity dues following the conversion of smart prepaid meters to postpaid mode across the state.In an official order issued on Wednesday, UPPCL managing director Nitish Kumar directed all power distribution companies to immediately convert smart meters installed under the RDSS scheme from prepaid to postpaid operation. The decision follows the UP govt’s announcement on May 4 that prepaid smart meters would function as postpaid meters.As per the order, domestic consumers with outstanding electricity dues up to Apr 30, 2026 — including late payment surcharge — will be allowed to clear the amount in 10 equal monthly instalments. Consumers have also been advised to make lump-sum payments where possible to avoid future surcharge.For non-domestic and other consumer categories, arrears up to Apr 30 can be paid in three instalments of 40%, 30% and 30%, in line with provisions of the Electricity Supply Code, 2005.The order also provides for recovery of the mandatory security deposit, which was earlier adjusted when meters were switched to prepaid mode. The recovery will begin from the June 2026 billing cycle (to be generated in July 2026) and continue over the next three monthly bills. The corporation clarified that the entire exercise will be carried out automatically through the revenue management system, without requiring any manual billing intervention.UPPCL said monthly bills for smart postpaid consumers will be generated by the 10th of every month and delivered via SMS and WhatsApp. Special complaint counters will be set up at subdivision and executive engineer offices between May 15 and June 30 to address smart meter-related grievances.The corporation said that these measures aim to ensure a smooth transition to postpaid billing while offering financial relief to consumers during the changeover.
