Lucknow: In an intense crackdown on noise pollution caused by vehicles, UP police on Saturday said it issued challans to over 11,000 violators and collected Rs 3.97 crore in fines in a statewide enforcement drive conducted last month.The crackdown was carried out on the directions of the traffic directorate, targeting vehicles fitted with illegal modifications, pressure horns, and hootersAccording to official data, out of 2.13 lakh vehicles checked, 11, 036 vehicles were issued challans during the five-day campaign held between Apr 3-5 and Apr 18-19 across multiple districts.Of these, 4,151 vehicles were penalised for unauthorised modifications, with fines amounting to ₹1.33 crore. As many as 6,039 vehicles were fined ₹2.42 crore for using pressure horns, while 846 vehicles were penalised for installing hooters, leading to recovery of ₹21.37 lakh.The enforcement followed a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by traffic and road safety director, A. Satish Ganesh, which categorises noise pollution violations as punishable offences under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.Authorities have warned that strict action will continue against violators as part of efforts to curb rising noise pollution and improve road safety.
