Lucknow: Think twice before you post your real-time vacation photographs on social media. Reason: it might bring burglars to your home. In a new trend, burglars are now using digital footprints to identify locked homes, says Lucknow police after probing some recent thefts in the city. The warning follows a case in which a Lucknow couple returned from a Shimla trip and found their home burgled. Police later arrested the accused, who confessed they had specifically targeted the house after tracking the couple’s vacation posts online, which confirmed the house would remain locked for several days.Similar thefts were reported from other parts of the city. A senior officer privy to the probe said the modus operandi of such gangs has evolved significantly. “Earlier, criminals conducted physical recce—looking for indicators like piled-up newspapers, locked gates, or inactive houses. Now, they scan social media platforms, track public profiles, monitor check-ins, and analyse posts to determine if an entire family is away,” the officer said. The modus then is the same — break into the locked house, steal valuables and flee.Investigators said burglars often shortlist targets by observing repeated travel updates, luxury posts, or predictable routines. Once convinced that a house is unoccupied, they conduct brief physical verification before striking.Another officer said that usually, these days all family members are on social media and they mark all, and thieves who scan your digital footprints follow it. The clothes in these photos also tell about your background giving another hint to the thieves for targeting.“People unknowingly provide precise information about their absence by posting airport selfies, live location updates, and detailed travel itineraries,” said a senior officer from the cyber cell. “These posts act as direct signals to offenders that a house is unoccupied.”BOXHOW TO STAY SAFE ON SOCIAL MEDIAPolice advise people to turn off location tagging to prevent revealing your exact location. Second, restrict access so only trusted people can see your posts and stories. Third, do not reveal travel duration – Avoid captions like “out for a week” or “entire family away.” Fourth, check followers regularly and remove unknown or suspicious accounts from your list. Fifth, control app permissions –by disabling unnecessary location and data access for social media apps. Last, on WhatsApp, restrict profile photo, status, and last seen to contacts only.
