Lucknow: Female characters in stories written by Munshi Premchand were courageous, independent and always stood up for themselves whenever the situation demanded. This was stated by writer Amita Dubey in the discussion on ‘Women in Premchand’s Literature’ , organised by Abhivyakti Cultural and Welfare Society at Kabir Peace Mission on Thursday. The event was organised to mark the 146th birth anniversary of the most celebrated Hindi author.Remembered as the ‘Emperor of Novels’, Premchand authored over 300 short stories and a dozen novels that portrayed the lives of common people, peasants, labourers and the lower middle class. Senior dramatist Lalit Singh Pokhariya said women formed the core of Premchand’s literary creations.Chief guest retired IAS officer Jaishankar Mishra said Premchand’s writings mirrored the realities of society and remained committed to the welfare of the common man. The programme concluded with a stage adaptation of Premchand’s famous story ‘Isteefa’, directed by K K Agarwal.
