LUCKNOW: A 25-year-old pump operator died of electrocution while on duty at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Sunday, triggering protests by co-workers and family members at the Trauma Centre.The deceased, Rahul Gautam, a resident of Leelakheda village under Dubagga police station.Employees said Rahul was operating a pump during sewer tank cleaning when he came in contact with electric current despite claims that the power supply had been switched off. He was rushed to the Trauma Centre, where he died during treatment.Following the incident, workers and relatives gathered at the Trauma Centre and raised slogans, alleging negligence by the contractor and company officials. They demanded action against those responsible and compensation for the family.Employees alleged that Rahul was made to work without safety equipment and proper arrangements. They said the accident could have been avoided if safety norms had been followed.Rahul’s brother, Anushasit, alleged that the company had sent him for the work without providing a safety kit. He also claimed that workers were not given insurance cover and no provident fund (PF, a retirement savings scheme) accounts had been opened. The family said Rahul earned about Rs 7,000 per month.A contractor’s representative said Rahul had been associated with the company for nearly six years and was covered under PF, ESI (Employees’ State Insurance, a medical and social security scheme) and insurance. The representative said the company would provide financial assistance and that Rahul’s wife would receive pension benefits. Compensation under insurance may range between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, subject to documentation.Rahul is survived by his wife and a two-month-old child. Officials said the family initially hesitated to allow a postmortem.Police from Chowk reached the spot, pacified protesters, and took the body into custody. The inquest was completed in the presence of family members and the body was sent for postmortem.Police said the matter is being investigated and action will be taken based on evidence and complaints. KGMU has also initiated an internal inquiry into the incident.
