Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai met former MP Tanjeen Fatima, wife of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, in Rampur on Tuesday and assured her that the Congress would continue to stand with the family and support efforts to protect Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. The meeting came a day after the Rampur commissioner ordered a temporary halt to the proposed demolition.Earlier, Rai congratulated the protesters on the administration’s decision to put the demolition on hold and distributed sweets, saying the stay strengthened the campaign to protect the institution.Speaking after the meeting, Rai alleged that the proposed demolition was an anti-education move and reiterated that the Congress would oppose it from the streets to the legislature. He said he earlier wrote to the Governor seeking intervention after the Rampur Development Authority issued notices proposing the demolition of 38 buildings.Rai alleged that the state govt was attempting to dismantle the university because it was established under the leadership of Azam Khan.
