Lucknow: A 35-year-old property dealer died by suicide on Thursday night after allegedly losing a large sum of money in IPL betting, police said on Friday.Police found a suicide note from the spot in which Jain allegedly mentioned losing money in the match and apologised to his family. Police also said they are examining financial transactions to identify any larger betting network that may be linked to the case.ACP Ghazipur (Indiranagar), Anindya Vikram Singh said the handwriting on the note is being verified and further investigation will be carried out based on bank records and any complaint from family members.“The content in Hindi read: Due to losing money in IPL betting I am committing suicide,” police said. The incident took place around 9pm in the Gudamba police station area when the man jumped from the 11th floor of an apartment building while a live match was underway. The deceased, a native of Sitapur, had been living on rent in LDA’s Janeshwar apartments on Kursi road. According to police, he was watching an IPL match reportedly between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Giants, when the incident occurred.Investigators said Jain was involved in “session betting,” a form of illegal wagering in which bets are placed on outcomes of every ball, over, or short phase of the match. Preliminary findings suggest he incurred heavy losses during the game.Shortly before the incident, the man called his wife, who was at her parental home in Sitapur. In her statement to police, she said he was crying during the call and told her, “I have lost a lot.” The call got disconnected soon after, and she could not reach him again.Residents of the society said they heard a loud thud and rushed outside, finding the man critically injured. “An ambulance was called, and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” police added. The couple had got married eight months ago.Neighbours described the couple as reserved and said they had moved into the apartment around Diwali last year.Police also noted that he had faced personal losses in the past too.
