Lucknow: A speeding SUV, allegedly driven by a doctor, rammed a scooter carrying three people before running over four people sleeping on a footpath, leaving one dead and four others critically injured near Burlington Crossing in the early hours of Sunday, police said.The SUV, driven by Dr Washid Saeed, an intern at a reputed medical institute in the city, first hit the scooter from behind. The impact killed the rider on the spot and injured two pillion riders.The deceased was identified as Sushil alias Sonu, 25, a resident of Alambagh. He was riding a non-gear scooter when the vehicle struck him. After the collision, the SUV went out of control, veered off the road and mounted the footpath, running over four labourers who were asleep.At least six people sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to Balrampur Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.SHO Kaiserbagh Anjani Mishra confirmed that the accused was arrested and the SUV was also seized. “We are investigating the exact circumstances, including the possibility of speeding or negligence,” he said.In a complaint lodged at the Kaiserbagh police station, Jagdish Chandra Mehra, employer of the victims, said three youths — Sushil, Suraj Kashyap and Hemant Sahu, all around 25 — were on the scooter near Ratan Square around 3 am when the speeding SUV, bearing a Chhattisgarh registration number, hit them.“Sushil died on the spot, while Suraj and Hemant were admitted to Balrampur Hospital and later shifted to KGMU Trauma Centre, where their condition is critical,” police said.The injured labourers were identified as Nomaan, Adil, Ijaz and Abdullah. Adil and Nomaan were referred to the KGMU Trauma Centre, while the other two are recovering and their injuries are not life-threatening, said Dr Sanjay Teotia of Balrampur Hospital.
