Lucknow: In a bid to ease long queues and improve Aadhaar service delivery, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) regional headquarters in Lucknow has introduced a new ‘Tatkal’ appointment system a token management system (TMS), allowing applicants to secure instant slots through a barcode-based facility at the office.A brainchild of Lt Col Prashant Kumar Singh, deputy director general at UIDAI Lucknow, the system aims to provide faster and more convenient Aadhaar-related services.Under the initiative, a thumb-symbol barcode has been installed on the ground floor of the regional office. Applicants can scan the code to register for tatkal appointments, with around 70 slots made available daily. On days of heavy rush, the capacity can be extended to accommodate up to 120 applicants. In contrast, the office typically handles around 140 regular appointments, which are booked nearly 10 days in advance.Tatkal slots open at 6am on working days. If slots remain available after 11am, applicants must be within a 100-metre radius of the office to book an appointment with the barcode. Priority is given to children and individuals travelling from distant locations of UP, ensuring more equitable access to services. In addition to the Tatkal system, the regional office has implemented an integrated digital mechanism combining a TMS, spreadsheet-based analysis, grievance redressal workflows and WhatsApp communication.“This closely interknit system enables pre-scrutiny of applications, allowing residents to receive guidance on required documents and alternative solutions before visiting the office,” said Singh, the 2001 batch IRSME (Indian railway service of mechanical engineering) officer who is credited for initiating the Aadhaar verification programme in UP, which helped in the recovery of over 400 missing children and women.“The system has significantly reduced unnecessary footfall, improved queue management and enhanced overall citizen experience by delivering faster, more efficient and citizen-centric Aadhaar services,” added Singh.
