British prime minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce his resignation on Monday and outline a timetable for his departure, The Observer reported on Saturday. The newspaper said Starmer had concluded that his position was no longer tenable following discussions with cabinet ministers, advisers, donors and trade union leaders. The report said Starmer was discussing the issue with his wife at his Chequers country residence before making a final decision, but that senior Labour Party figures were expecting a definitive statement on his future as early as Monday. The pressure on Starmer has intensified following Andy Burnham’s emphatic victory in the Makerfield by-election, a result that has fuelled speculation about a potential leadership challenge within the Labour Party.A growing number of Labour MPs are reportedly urging Starmer to set out a timetable for his departure and facilitate a transition to Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, without triggering a potentially divisive leadership contest. However, Starmer earlier insisted he would contest any challenge and not “walk away” from the role.Burnham’s allies have called on the prime minister to use the weekend to reflect and consult with cabinet ministers, MPs and his family. Meanwhile, teams representing Burnham and another potential contender, Wes Streeting, have indicated they will avoid media appearances over the weekend, in what is seen as an effort to give Starmer time to reconsider his position.According to reports, Starmer spent part of Friday contacting cabinet colleagues to assess the level of support he retains within his senior team. The BBC reported that Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander was among those who suggested he consider setting a timetable for stepping down.
