Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is fast emerging as one of India’s leading electric vehicle (EV) markets, with the state’s share in the country’s total EV sales touching 18%, an official spokesperson said on Thursday.“Riding on a sharp rise in registrations and subsidy uptake, the UP govt is now targeting to increase this share to 25-30% over the next two years,” officials said, adding that the state’s EV Manufacturing and Mobility Policy-2022 has begun to show tangible results.Citing an example, they said: “Approvals for EV subsidies registered a 241% jump in the financial year 2025-26 compared to the previous year.”According to the transport department data, 47,514 subsidy applications were approved in FY26 against 13,950 in FY25.Between April 1 and June 22 alone, another 9,934 applications have already been approved, indicating sustained demand for electric vehicles.Officials said 86,489 subsidy applications have been approved under the state’s EV subsidy scheme so far, while subsidies have already been disbursed to more than 43,000 beneficiaries.Electric two-wheelers continue to dominate the market. Of the total approved applications, 61,417 were for two-wheelers, followed by 24,959 four-wheelers, 104 electric goods carriers and nine electric buses. The state govt attributed the growth to a combination of financial incentives, expanding charging infrastructure and a fully digital subsidy disbursal system.Officials noted that UP now has over 15 lakh registered EVs and 2,316 charging stations, including 540 fast chargers and 1,776 slow chargers, established over the past five years. With EV adoption is expected to accelerate further, officials estimate the state will require nearly 38,000 charging stations in the coming years. To bridge this gap, Uttar Pradesh Renewable and EV Infrastructure Limited (UPREV) is developing charging infrastructure under the public-private partnership model at expressways, major cities, bus terminals, railway stations and tourist destinations.High-speed chargers have already been installed along the Yamuna Expressway, Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Lucknow-Agra Expressway. The subsidy application process has also been digitised through the dedicated upevsubsidy.in portal, allowing applicants to complete documentation, verification and payment online. After multi-level verification, the subsidy is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account.Officials said the transparent subsidy mechanism, coupled with improved charging infrastructure and financial incentives, is expected to further accelerate EV adoption and help UP consolidate its position among the country’s leading electric mobility markets.
