In a major change to the Civil Services Examination process, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 will be released immediately after the examination concludes. The preliminary examination is scheduled for May 24, 2026.The Commission said the move is aimed at improving transparency and strengthening confidence in the examination process. Until now, the answer key for the prelims examination was made public only after the declaration of the final results. Candidates had repeatedly raised concerns over the absence of a mechanism to challenge possible discrepancies in the preliminary stage.Candidates to get objection windowFollowing the release of the provisional answer key, candidates will be able to submit objections through the Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep) available on the UPSC online website. The objection window will remain open until 6:00 PM on May 31, 2026.Candidates filing objections will be required to provide a brief explanation supporting their claim and submit evidence from three authentic sources. According to the Commission, all objections received will be reviewed by subject experts, who will examine the supporting material before recording their observations on the disputed questions.UPSC clarified that the final answer key will be released only after all objections have been considered. Chairman Ajay Kumar described the initiative as a “new beginning” and said the step reflects efforts to ensure greater transparency, faster communication, and accountability towards candidates.Relief for lakhs of aspirantsEvery year, more than 500,000 candidates appear for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, while nearly 12,000 to 15,000 candidates qualify for the Main Examination stage. Aspirants had long argued that delayed publication of answer keys left them uncertain about whether to continue preparing for the Main Examination or shift focus to the next attempt. The earlier release of the answer key is expected to help candidates assess their performance sooner and make decisions regarding their preparation strategy. UPSC stated that the revised process is intended to make the examination system more participatory while maintaining fairness and merit-based selection standards.New measures introduced for CSE 2026UPSC has also announced several changes for the 2026 examination cycle. Face authentication using Artificial Intelligence (AI) will now be mandatory at examination centres for all UPSC recruitment examinations, including the Civil Services Examination. The system will be used to detect impersonation and prevent the use of dummy candidates during examinations.Candidates with disabilities will now be allotted examination centres according to their preferred choice of venue. The Commission has also introduced restrictions on repeated attempts by serving officers. Candidates already appointed to the IAS or IFS will not be eligible to appear for CSE-2026. Those appointed after the preliminary stage but before the Main Examination will not be allowed to appear in the mains examination.Key examination guidelinesUPSC has reiterated that entry gates at examination venues will close 30 minutes before the start of each session. Candidates will not be permitted to enter after 09:00 AM for the forenoon session and 02:00 PM for the afternoon session. The Commission has instructed candidates to use only black ballpoint pens for filling OMR answer sheets and attendance sheets. Admit cards and valid photo identity proof will remain mandatory, while mobile phones, watches, and electronic gadgets will not be allowed inside examination halls.
