Lucknow: For safer roads and disciplined commuting, Lucknow Traffic Police carried out an extensive checking campaign between May 16 and May 17, during which 7,800 vehicles were inspected and penalties amounting to over Rs 32 lakh imposed on violators.According to report released by traffic police, special campaign was conducted in different parts of the city under the ‘Safe Traffic, Safe Lucknow’ drive. The drive primarily targeted drunken driving, modified silencers, pressure horns, hooters, defective number plates and vehicles operating without High Security Registration Plates (HSRP).DCP, traffic, Raveena Tyagi, said 13 motorists were challaned for drunken driving. Driving under influence remains leading cause of fatal road accidents and traffic police warned of strict action against offenders.“The campaign also focused heavily on vehicles fitted with illegal modified silencers causing noise pollution and reckless driving and challans against 127 vehicles using modified silencers were issued to the tune of Rs 4.57 lakh,” she said.Also, 53 vehicles were penalised for using pressure horns and hooters in violation of traffic and noise pollution norms and Rs 5.3 lakh was collected as fine.Maximum, 374 vehicles were challanedwere for faulty number plates and no HSRP compliance.Overall, traffic police collected compounding fee of approximately Rs 32.12 lakh during the drive. In a public appeal, DCP traffic urged commuters to follow road safety norms strictly, wear helmets and seat belts, avoid mobile phone use while driving, and refrain from driving under influence of alcohol.
