Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Vijay on taking oath as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, and said the Centre would continue working with the state government for the welfare of the people.“Congratulations to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay on taking oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Best wishes for his tenure ahead. The Central Government will keep working with the Tamil Nadu Government to improve the lives of people,” PM Modi said through a post on X.C Joseph Vijay, chief of TVK and leader of its Legislature Party, was sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday in a colourful ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay during the event.Apart from Vijay, nine other leaders from TVK, N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K A Sengottaiyan, K G Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, T K Prabhu, and S Keerthana, were sworn in as ministers in the party’s first Cabinet.Ahead of the ceremony, Vijay welcomed Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the venue and introduced him to the ministers-designate.The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections marked a major political shift in the state, with TVK winning 108 of the 234 seats in its electoral debut. The results also marked the first time that both major Dravidian parties were voted out of power simultaneously.Although TVK fell short of the majority mark on its own, the party secured support from the Congress, CPI(M), CPI, VCK and IUML, all of which were previously part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.Vijay, popularly known as ‘Thalapathy’, drew large crowds during the campaign, with several observers comparing his political rise to that of former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran. Tamil Nadu has a long history of actors entering politics, and Vijay’s emergence has often been viewed as the next major chapter after Vijayakanth.
