Lucknow: A 27-year-old woman died at a trauma centre in Lucknow nearly 20 days after undergoing an abortion at a private hospital in Sultanpur, prompting her family to accuse the private facility of medical negligence and stage a road blockade after her body was brought back to the village. The deceased, Gudiya, a resident of Pidhi village under Jaisinghpur area, had undergone the procedure at the clinic run by nurse Shanti at Mustafa Saraiya market around 20 days ago. Her mother, Urmila, alleged that Gudiya’s condition deteriorated after the abortion and she was later shifted to a trauma centre in Lucknow, where she died during treatment on Monday. After her body reached the village, family members and local residents placed it on Kadipur-Dostpur road and blocked traffic, demanding action against the nurse and her associates.Following an assurance from officials, the protest was called off after about an hour. Police subsequently registered two cases against nurse Shanti and her associate Bhim Charan, including charges relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and unauthorised medical practice.Circle officer, Sultanpur, Vinay Gautam said a police team had been formed to arrest the accused. The clinic was also sealed in the presence of health department officials constituted by the chief medical officer. Officials reportedly did not find the required documents during the inspection.Police said further action would be based on the post-mortem examination report and findings of the investigation.
