Lucknow: Lucknow has emerged as the leading district in rooftop solar installations in the country, overtaking Surat, according to official data released up to Apr 15.The figures relate to installations carried out under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a central govt scheme aimed at promoting residential solar power generation.According to the UP New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), 3,133 rooftop solar plants were installed in Lucknow by Apr 15. Cumulatively, more than 87,000 rooftop solar systems have been set up in the district so far, the highest among all districts nationwide.Data released for Jan-Apr indicates a steady rise in solar adoption in the state capital. Officials attribute the increase to higher electricity consumption in urban areas, driven by the growing use of electrical appliances, induction cooktops and electric vehicles. Rising power tariffs and increased awareness about renewable energy have also contributed to the trend.“The availability of subsidies from both the central and state govts, along with a simplified application and approval process, has facilitated faster adoption of rooftop solar systems. Coordination between discoms and implementing agencies has further streamlined installations,” said an official.Officials said Lucknow’s performance is being closely observed as a benchmark for other districts.Other cities in UP are also witnessing increased uptake of rooftop solar installations.
