Jaipur: Goa is consolidating its position as one of the country most sought-after tourism destinations, recording consistent growth in arrivals while shifting its focus from sheer numbers to high-value, sustainable experiences.Goa tourism minister Rohan A Khaunte said who attended the Great Indian Travel Bazaar in the city last week said that domestic arrivals have grown by nearly 6% annually, while international visitors have increased by 3.5–4% over the past three years. With a population of just 1.5 million, the coastal state now caters to close to 10 million tourists annually, crossing the milestone in 2025 as part of its strong post-pandemic recovery.“Domestic tourism remains the backbone of this growth, driven by rising travel trends. Younger travellers, Gen Z and Gen Alpha, are increasingly opting for both planned and spontaneous trips, marking a demographic shift in Goa’s visitor profile. Travel is no longer limited to families. Younger groups are exploring Goa in new ways,” said Khaunte.International arrivals, traditionally concentrated between September and May, are showing renewed strength, he said, citing the inflows in the first quarter of 2026 that outperformed the same period last year.“While the UK and Russia remain important markets, Goa is attracting new interest from Germany, Poland, Central Asia, and parts of the US. Charter connectivity, especially from the UK, has boosted inbound traffic, though limited direct flights from emerging markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Nordic countries remain a challenge,” said the minister.Tourism contributes nearly 16.4% to Goa’s GDP and supports up to 40% of employment, making it the state’s primary economic driver after the mining sector’s decline. To ensure resilience, Goa is pioneering “regenerative tourism,” embedding benefits for local communities, culture, and environment. Homestays, skill development, and promotion of Goan cuisine and festivals are part of this effort. At the GITB), Goa unveiled its vision of becoming a 365-day destination. The “Goa beyond beaches” narrative emphasizes cultural festivals, monsoon tourism, and emerging segments such as wellness, ayurveda, MICE, weddings, sports, and culinary tourism.Speaking at the GITB, Khaunte said, “Goa offers a strong value advantage over other global destination hubs. Inspired by initiatives like Dekho Apna Desh and with the continued support of Union govt, our focus is on positioning Goa as a globally competitive, year-round destination, one that not only delivers consistent value to travellers and partners, but also strengthens India’s presence in high-value tourism segments and drives sustainable, long-term growth for the sector.”
