COIMBATORE: Giant posters put up by supporters of former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai across Coimbatore have intensified political speculation that he could be preparing to launch a new political movement amid reports of growing differences with the BJP leadership. The posters, carrying slogans such as “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us,” have appeared on major roads and streets in the city ahead of Annamalai’s birthday. The development comes at a time when discussions about his political future have gained momentum in Tamil Nadu political circles. BJP sources confirmed that Annamalai is currently in Delhi.A former IPS officer, Annamalai joined the BJP in 2020 and served as the party’s Tamil Nadu president from 2021 to 2025. During his tenure, he emerged as one of the party’s most visible faces in the state, undertaking statewide campaigns and attracting significant support among youth and social media users.Speculation about his next move intensified after the 2026 assembly elections, during which he was not fielded as a candidate as by his wish in Coimbatore assembly constituency. His recent criticism of the Centre’s decision to advance the implementation of the three-language policy for Class IX students has also triggered this talk among political debate. However, BJP leaders dismissed suggestions of a split, pointing out that Annamalai’s statewide prominence was built through the party and asserting that he remains aware of that fact.Weirdly, there is speculation that Annamalai could quit the BJP and contest the anticipated by-election from the Perundurai Assembly constituency, the sitting AIADMK MLA resigns. Some observers believe he may seek a more prominent role within the BJP instead of launching a separate political outfit.Rumours about Annamalai floating a new political party have gained traction since the conclusion of the 2026 Assembly elections. However, the former state BJP president has so far remained silent on the issue, neither confirming nor denying the reports, further fuelling political speculation about his future course of action.
