GURGAON: In a horrific accident on the Dwarka Expressway on Friday afternoon, a cab driver was killed after an iron rod protruding from an e-rickshaw pierced his chest during a collision, police said.A woman passenger travelling in the cab sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.According to police, the accident took place around 2 pm when the cab collided with an e-rickshaw carrying long iron rods on the expressway.Several rods were jutting out from the three-wheeler without warning signs or markers indicating the overhang. The impact crushed the front portion of the cab, sending one of the iron rods through the windshield and into the driver’s chest. He died on the spot.Police teams from Sector 37 police station and the traffic department rushed to the scene after receiving information. The driver’s body was later extricated from the mangled vehicle after considerable effort and sent for post-mortem examination. The crash also led to traffic congestion on the expressway. Authorities subsequently removed the damaged vehicles and restored traffic movement.During questioning, the e-rickshaw driver claimed that he was driving slowly when the cab rammed his vehicle from behind. He has been detained for further investigation.“Preliminary investigation suggests that overspeeding and the rear-end collision were the primary causes of the accident. We are also examining CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events,” a senior police officer said.Police said the deceased cab driver was a native of Uttar Pradesh and his family has been informed. The investigation is underway.(With PTI inputs)
