HATHRAS: A dismissed Uttar Pradesh Police constable has been arrested for allegedly murdering a beggar and burning the body in a bid to fake his own death in Hathras district, police said on Thursday. The incident took place on March 12 near Hathras Road Halt of the North Eastern Railway, where a charred body of an unidentified elderly man was found at a tin shed, officials said. According to police, Ramveer Singh (55), a former constable dismissed from service over criminal activities, allegedly killed the beggar and set the body on fire. He then placed his own identity card and belongings near the remains to mislead investigators into believing he had died. A case was initially registered at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Hathras City. During the investigation, police uncovered the alleged conspiracy, leading to Singh’s arrest on April 14. Singh is a resident of the Kishni area in Mainpuri district. GRP Hathras City station in-charge Suyash Singh said the accused attempted to stage his own death, but the plot was exposed during the probe. It remains unclear why he allegedly tried to fake his death. Police said Singh is a habitual offender with multiple cases registered across districts including Firozabad, Aligarh, Moradabad, Hardoi, Mainpuri and Badaun, involving serious charges such as kidnapping, murder, robbery and fraud. He also sustained burn injuries during the incident, officials added. The identity of the deceased, believed to be a beggar in sadhu attire, has not yet been established.
